Dr. Alexander Lai, associate professor of biology, is the corresponding author of 鈥淓mergence and Characterization of a Novel Reassortant Canine Influenza Virus Isolated from Cats.鈥
鈥淲e have discovered a new feline influenza virus,鈥 Lai said, 鈥淚t is a reassortant virus of canine influenza virus with the NS (non-structural) gene from human influenza virus. Although there has been no report of human infection yet, the presence of NS gene is significant. It allows this virus to counteract the immune response when infecting humans. Identification of potential pandemic-causing virus allows scientists to develop diagnostic tools, vaccines, and drugs. Therefore, it is important to maintain a surveillance program for emerging viruses."
